American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts
has a
fabulous coaching staff which includes Steve Marcil, the assistant
coach
for the woman's team. Mr. Marcil is also a teacher at the White
Oak
School in Westfield. I was able to catch up with him after class
and ask
him about his coaching position at AIC.
Q: How did your season at AIC go this year?
A: We went 22-10. That's a school record, and we made it to
the second
round of the NCAA tournament. That's the fourth time the team
did that.
Q: Who was your best all-round player this year?
A: That would have to be Rona McKenzie. She was All Conference
and is
from Canada. Rona was a former Canadian Player of the Year. She
also
made it on the East Region All Star team.
Q: What does your job consist of during the regular season
?
A: I help run the practices, and I make sure the girls go
to school and
get good grades. I also have to plan out strategies and make
game plans.
Q: Do you ever recruit players from Western Mass?
A: Yes, Christine Paterson is from Agawam, and she's our starting
point
guard. We also have another player from Adams, Mass. and she
made the
second team.
Q: What should basketball players do in the off season to
stay in shape
for next year?
A: They should lift weights three days a week, and run three
days a
week. During the summer, players should practice basketball to
stay in
shape.
Q: What should a high school player do to prepare to play
basketball at
the college level?
A: High school players should get in shape. They should learn
to listen
to the coach. Also, basketball is one of the only sports you
can
practice by yourself. High school players, who want to play in
college,
should practice a little every day.
Q: What summer camps will you be working at this year?
A: I will be working three weeks up at AIC, one week at Stone
Hill
College, and I run a camp down at the Cape. I also might fly
down and
work at Vanderbilt University.
